SOHP 2024 Fall Symposium
Thursday, November 21 through Friday, November 22
Swain Hall- Studio 6, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Join us for a dynamic student-centered symposium showcasing the transformative power of oral history. This event highlights the work of graduate and undergraduate students who have spent the semester engaging with oral histories, exploring their potential to connect, challenge, and reimagine how we understand the past and present.
SOHP Coursework Projects:
Students from HIST593: Introduction to Oral History taught by SOHP Associate Director Phillip MacDonald and SOHP Field Scholar Sophie To will share insights, reflections, and key themes from their semester-long oral history projects focused on Public Health.
Students from Comm.562: Oral History and Performance taught by SOHP Director Renée Alexander Craft will place excerpts from the “Institute of African American Research Oral History Project” in dialogue through a dynamic staged reading. Their performance will include they conducted with former IAAR leaders as well as those conducted by Fall 2023 students.
SOHP Field Scholar Research Projects:
Our Field Scholars, Sophie To and Anna Elliot, will deliver a brief presentation highlighting their innovative research projects. They will share insights from their work, offering a deeper understanding of the methodologies and themes shaping oral history today. The presentations and performance offer a glimpse into the diverse stories they’ve collected and the challenges and rewards of engaging with narrators to uncover lived experiences.
