The Southern Oral History Program offers several competitive awards for current undergraduate and graduate students attending UNC Chapel Hill who are pursuing oral history research or fieldwork during summer 2023. Undergraduates who are graduating in spring 2023 are not eligible to apply.
Applications are now being accepted for summer 2023 awards. The deadline for all summer 2023 awards is Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

Proposals must align with the standards of the SOHP’s work and mission. For projects proposing oral history fieldwork, interviews can be considered for deposit in SOHP’s collection at the Southern Historical Collection in the Wilson Special Collections Library.
Jacquelyn Dowd Hall Graduate Summer Research Fellowship
The Jacquelyn Dowd Hall Graduate Summer Research Fellowship is made possible by its namesake fund, in honor of the founding director of the Southern Oral History Program. The summer research fellowship provides one graduate student currently attending UNC Chapel Hill with a $4,000 award to pursue oral history research or fieldwork during the summer of 2023.
All recipients of summer funding will be required to submit a mid-summer progress report of what has been accomplished so far, and a plan for work yet to be done. By the end of the summer award period, recipients will submit an impact statement and will share their findings at an event at The Center for the Study of the American South in the fall of 2023.

- Tell us about your project/research interest. Explain your work to someone that is not an expert in your field (250 words maximum).
- Tell us about your research approach. Describe the steps you will take to complete your project. Briefly summarize any preliminary work accomplished for your project and/or the course work and other experience you have had that demonstrates your capacity to complete your project successfully (250 words maximum).
- Tell us about the Intended outcomes of your work by the end of the award period. Include any resulting product of your research and your plan for sharing this product with others (250 words maximum).
- Share your plan for how you would use your funding. Funding can support living and travel expenses, as well as materials needed for your research (100 words maximum).
- Please have your advisor complete a letter of support and submit here, or by email.
SOHP Undergraduate Research Planning Grants
The Southern Oral History Program (SOHP) Undergraduate Summer Awards provide startup funding for four undergraduates in the amount of $2,500 each to support preliminary oral history planning and preparation work resulting in the identification of oral history fieldwork or research you will further explore beyond the summer award period.
All recipients of summer funding will be required to submit a mid-summer progress report of what has been accomplished so far, and a plan for work yet to be done. By the end of the summer award period, recipients will submit an impact statement and will share their findings at an event at The Center for the Study of the American South in the fall of 2023.
