citizens and groups across the state interested in oral history. Millwood was one of four members of the University community who received the prestigious Bryan Award for 2004. Millwood and other service award winners were honored at an April 8, 2004, awards luncheon at the Alumni Center on the UNC campus.
Administered by the Carolina Center for Public Service, the Robert E. Bryan Public Service Award honors individuals who "have demonstrated exemplary public service to the state of North Carolina, have worked in partnership with community members, have provided direct service, have inspired and involved others, or through their support have enabled others to serve and have worked to assure the sustainability of their efforts."
In nominating Millwood, SOHP director Jacquelyn Hall observed: "For more than seven years Beth Millwood has directed and inspired the public service mission of the Southern Oral History Program (SOHP). We know her officially as our Coordinator of Outreach, but countless others across North Carolina, across the UNC campus, and in our offices know her as the face of the SOHP and the embodiment of that singular University ideal: the exhaustively knowledgeable, unfailingly generous professional who deploys her intellectual gifts for the direct benefit of the wider public. Beth is the bridge connecting our research with the the needs of North Carolinians, the individual who defines, facilitates, and delivers our resources to a public constituency. Ask a local oral history group anywhere across North Carolina, and they will likely report that their work is better because of Beth Millwood."
Congratulations to Beth for this much deserved honor!
